Cape Borda on Kangaroo Island

One of the most remote locations on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Cape Borda is a lighthouse on the far north west corner of the Island. Built in 1858, it’s the third oldest remaining lighthouse in South Australia. A uniquely short and square lighthouse sitting atop some of South Australia’s tallest cliffs.
Tours and lighthouse keeper accommodation was provided at the lighthouse prior to the Black Summer Bushfires of 2019/20. The surround Flinders Chase National Park was damaged extensively. Currently there are no guided tours available, but visitors are able to take a self-guided tour around the lighthouse and the historic buildings and get an insight into the early lightkeepers’ living conditions, and how isolation and a demanding routine dominated their often harsh lives.
There is a walking trail connecting the lighthouse to Harvey’s Return and the lightkeepers cemetery. Visitors can traverse the 9km return hike or can stop by these sites via car located along the Cape Borda road.
